The Koutloumousiou Monastery ( Greek Μονή Κουτλουμουσίου ) is an Orthodox monastery in the monastic republic on the Athos peninsula in Greece . It is in sixth place in the hierarchy of the Athos monasteries. It is one of the twenty self-governing monasteries on Athos and was dedicated to the transfiguration of Christ .

history

The monastery was probably founded in the 11th century. According to one version, the founder of the monastery in the 11th century was an employee of the court of Suleiman ibn Kutalmiş (1077-1086), the founder of the Sultanate of Rum and thus a new Seljuk dynasty. Accordingly, the monastery would be named after Suleiman's nickname, which is Koutloumous in Greek . According to another version, the founder came from the monastic world of Palestine and fled from the Islamization to Mount Athos in the 11th century , whereby he could have named the monastery after the Church of the Holy Sepulcher , which was called Koutloumous from an old Arabic dialect . The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem .

The first written mention is dated to the year 1169. The then neighboring monastery Alypiou was subordinated to Koutloumousiou in 1428.

After the efforts of the later abbot Chariton von Imbros , the monastery received grants from Bulgaria , Serbia and Wallachia , whereby it rose in the hierarchy of the Athos monasteries from position 17 of then 25 monasteries to the current rank in 1534.
