The Esfigmenou Monastery ( Greek Μονή Εσφιγμένου ) is an Orthodox monastery right on the coast in the northern part of the Athos peninsula in Greece . It is in eighteenth place in the hierarchy of the Athos monasteries. It is one of the twenty self-governing monasteries on Athos and was dedicated to the Ascension of Christ .

Today the community of the monastery consists of around 115 monks, making it one of the largest on the peninsula. The monastery is located in the neighborhood of Hilandar Monastery , its foundation goes back to the 10th century.

Among the treasures of the monastery are the icon of the Mother of God, the Mercy of Mercy ( Eleusa ), the cross of Pulcheria , and parts of Napoleon's tent , which was worked into the curtain during Lent.

history

The monastery was ravaged several times by pirates or fire, for example in the years 873, 1047, 1491 and 1534. The Ottoman army used the monastery as barracks from 1821 to 1834 . The restoration of monastic life was led by Agathangelos Ayiannanitis from 1832 to 1871. All important buildings such as the bell tower , the chapels, parts of the Katholikon and the southern gateway originate from this period .
