Plomari ( Greek Πλωμάρι ( f. Sg. )) Is a small town in the municipality of Mytilini on the south coast of the Greek island of Lesbos . Together with Agios Isidoros and other hamlets, the third largest city on the island forms the municipality of Plomari ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Πλωμαρίου Dimotikí Kinótita Plomaríou ). According to the 2011 census, the municipality had 3276 inhabitants and the city had 2996 inhabitants.
Soon after it was founded in the mid-19th century, the place developed into a regional center and is currently the most important craft, trade and economic center on the island after Mytilini . The Ouzo of Plomari ( Ούζο Πλωμαρίου ) is the most famous product of the city.
location
Plomari is located on the south coast of Lesvos, about 12 km south of Agiasos and 21 km southwest of Mytilene . Extensive olive groves characterize the mountainous hinterland, higher altitudes merge into the densely wooded and sometimes difficult to access Olymbos massif ( Όρος Όλυμπος ).
The city extends for about 1.5 km along a narrow coastal strip. It extends only a little to the north, steep terrain forms the natural border. Only the Isa-Mesa district ( Ίσα-Μέσα ) extends in the eastern part along the Sedountas river valley ( Σεδούντας ) further into the hinterland. To the east, the resort of Agios Isidoros adjoins in loose development.
history
Until the middle of the 19th century, the old Plomari lay on the site of today's Megalochori, about 5 kilometers from the coast. It formed a regional handicraft and agricultural center of 18 villages called Ploumaria ( Πλουμάρια ). As a result of the destruction caused by three fires between 1841 and 1843 and the olive trees caused by the frost catastrophe in 1850, people moved near the coast. West of the mouth of the dry Sedountas stream ( Σεδούντας ) was already the insignificant fishing and harbor town of Ammoudeli ( Αμμουδέλι ). On the east side of the Sedountas a settlement developed in the area of Agios Nikolaos . Other residential areas quickly emerged, in the north along the Sedountas the city-like quarter of the craftsmen and traders Isa-Mesa and in the east Tarsana ( Ταρσανά ) the quarter of the seamen and dock workers. From the end of the century, the city called Potamos ( Ποταμός , river ) experienced a strong economic boom. The proximity to the sea favored the transport of goods and the settlement of several industrial companies and production facilities such as olive oil presses and soap factories. They originated along the coast on the western side of the river.
administration
Already at the end of the 19th century, the city was the seat of the judicial district of Kaza Plomari ( Turkish Pilimar Kazası ) in the Sandschak Midilli ( Midilli Sancağı ). After the end of the Ottoman rule, Plomari became the seat of the municipality of the same name Plomari (Δήμος Πλωμαρίου) in 1918. With the municipality reform in 1997 following the Kapodistrias program , seven rural municipalities were incorporated. As a result of the administrative reform in 2010 , the island communities were merged to form the newly created municipality of Lesbos ( Δήμος Λέσβου Dímos Lésvou ), the former municipality received the status of a municipality (Δημοτική Ενότητα) with Plomari as the administrative seat. Since the correction of the administrative reform in 2019, Plomari has belonged to the municipality of Mytilene .
