Sidirokastro ( Greek Σιδηρόκαστρο [ siðiˈrɔkastrɔ ] ( n. Sg. ) 'Eisenburg') is a small town in the Serres regional district in the Central Macedonia region of northern Greece . Sidirokastro was raised to the status of a township (dimos) in 1946 and steadily increased through incorporations until 1997; With the administrative reform in 2010 , it was absorbed into the newly founded Sindiki community , where it has been a district since then. Sidirokastro is also the seat of the municipality.
geography
Sidirokastro is located 25 km northwest of the city of Serres , between the mountains Vrondou and Angistro in the north and the river Strymonas in the west. The city is divided into two areas by the Krousovitis, one of the tributaries of the Strymonas. These are connected by two bridges, "Stavrou" and "Kalkani". The inhabitants of Sidirokastro are locals and refugees from different places: Asia Minor, the Melenikioi who came from Meleniko in 1913, Thracians who came from Eastern Thrace (European Turkey ) who came in 1922. The region is rich in minerals , especially manganese , copper and iron .

economy
The active population of the municipality (excluding students, unemployed and the elderly) is estimated at 4000 inhabitants, 68% of whom are employed in the primary sector ( agriculture ), with the main products: tobacco, potatoes, clover, cotton, wheat, corn, Olives and animal products. The secondary sector ( service ) employs 18% of the population who work in public services, banks and businesses.
