Spili ( Greek Σπήλι ( n. Sg. ), Outdated also Spilion ) is a mountain village on the Greek island of Crete . It is located 18 kilometers south of Rethymno , on the road from Rethymno to Agia Galini , and belongs to the Rethymno regional district . The place has 624 inhabitants including the hamlet of Dariviana ( Δαριβιανά ) with 60 inhabitants. The place name Spili is derived from the Greek word spílio for 'cave'.
description
Spili is the administrative seat of the municipality of Agios Vasilios and at the same time the capital of the municipality of Lambi . There is a health center (rural micro-hospital) in the village, which is responsible for the health care of the community, the districts of Lambi and Finikas . Spili is important throughout Crete as a bishopric with an attached seminary , seat of the Metropolitan of Lambi and Sfakia, whose buildings Saint Peter and Paul ( Άγιος Πέτρος και Παύλος ) are on the western edge of the village on the road to Rethymno.
Spili is located on a hill on the southwest slope of the Kedros Mountains and is surrounded by greenery. High plane trees provide shade in the village and at the well-known Venetian fountain in the center of the village , probably dating from the 16th century . From its 25 water spouts in the shape of lion heads, cool, drinkable water flows all year round from the springs above the village. The water is widely known to be particularly clean and mineral-rich and is also valued by locals. The former natural stone fountain was covered with tiles on the back wall and trough trap in 2006.
Spili also has three churches, Agii Theodori , Agios Georgios and Metamorfosis tou Sotira , whose wall paintings depict the damned.
