Mariou ( Greek Μαριού [ marˈju ] ( n. Sg. )) Is a village on the Greek island of Crete . It is located on the road from Asomatos to Myrthios at an altitude of about 190 meters and, together with the settlements of Palea Taverna and Damnoni, forms a village in the municipality of Finikas in the municipality of Agios Vasilios . Mariou itself has 303 inhabitants (as of 2011).

history

There is no precise information about when the village was founded. Its inhabitants mostly come from the Sfakia or the old settlement Kapari (Κάπαρη).

The vernacular derives the name of the village from that of the only daughter of a Sfakiot family who once lived here : the girl named Mario (Μαριώ) had many brothers who were shepherds and who called out loudly whenever they came back from the pastures. So over time the village got the name Mariou ( genitive of Mario). On old maps from the middle of the 19th century the village is still referred to as Neochori ('Neudorf') (for example on that of Thomas Abel Brimage Spratt , 1865).

Sightseeing and tourism

Despite the proximity to the tourist center of Plakias , Mariou has retained its originality, there are only a few private accommodations in the village center, only a tavern on the eastern edge of the village. An olive mill is the largest business enterprise .

The village on the hillside of the coastal mountain Kouroupa has an underground spring restored in 2008, above which the two chapels Panagitsa and Agios Simeon are built directly into a rock overhang. The spring used to ensure the village's drinking water supply. Above the village on the slope of the Kouroupa there is another cave chapel dedicated to Saint Onophrios .

The year of construction of the large old village church Panagia is not known, the newer one dedicated to Agios Vlasis was built in 1912. The Timeos Stavros chapel, visible from all sides, on a conical mountain south of the valley below Mariou, is also part of the municipality. With its unique all-round view, it is a much-visited hiking destination.
