The Greek community Kythira ( Greek Κύθηρα ( n. Pl. )) Was formed on January 1, 2011 from the communities Kythira and Andikythira and consists of the area of the two islands of the same name as well as numerous small, uninhabited islets and rocky islands. The territory of the municipality, which came to Greece with the annexation of the Ionian Islands in 1864, existed from 1864 to 1997 as the province of Kythira (gr. Eparchia Kythiron ). With the municipal reform in 1997 (Kapodistrias program) , the provinces were abolished and a municipality was established on the island of Kythira from 13 rural municipalities; the island and rural community of Andikythira initially continued to exist. The Kallikratis Program Act of May 2010 brought the two islands back together, this time as a municipality.

The affiliation to the Greek administrative units changed several times: in 1864 the province was part of the prefecture Zakynthos , came to Laconia in 1866 , in 1899 to the short-lived prefecture of Lakoniki, which included the Mani peninsula in addition to the two islands , in 1909 to the prefecture of Argolis and Korinthia, in 1929 to the prefecture of Attica and Boeotia, in 1943 to the then independent prefecture of Attica, 1964 for a few years to the prefecture of Piraeus and in 1972 with Piraeus back to Attica, albeit in the prefecture district of Piraeus . The municipality of Kythira is now part of the islands regional district of the Attica region , which sends two members to the 101-member Attic regional council, but otherwise has no political significance.

Structure of the community

The two predecessor parishes have the status of parish districts (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki enotita ), the former parishes, which correspond to the parishes before 1997, have the status of urban districts (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki kinotita - this only Andikyithra) local communities ( topiki kinotita - the rest). The population figures in brackets come from the results of the 2011 census.
