Chrysoupoli ( Greek Χρυσούπολη ( f. Sg. ); Until 1925 Turkish Sarışaban Σαρή Σαμπάν Сари Сабан) is a small town in the center of the Nestos Plain, about 4 km south of the Ethniki Odos 2 or the Aftokinitodromos 2 .

geography

The town is 28 km away from Kavala away and 26 km from Xanthi , 10 km, it is up to the Kavala Airport and 16 km from the port of Keramoti .

economy

Chrysoupoli used to be an important transport hub and many of the city's businesses were geared towards serving travelers. There were various hostels, restaurants, workshops, etc. Today the city is the center of the agrarian Nestos Delta and the large irrigation works that were built in the area. Mainly corn, beans, sugar beets, asparagus and kiwis are grown on the agricultural areas around Chrysoupoli. In addition, one of the country's larger brick factories is located there.

mythology

The Chrysoupoli area has been populated since ancient times. According to the legend, Orpheus is said to have met Dionysus in the alluvial forests . In a figurative sense, the East, represented by Dionysus and associated with wine, meets the West, represented by Orpheus, the representative of technology. The Hedoni (Idoni) were the first people to settle in this area. They named themselves after Edonos , the son Ares is said to have fathered with the nymph Kallirrhoë (in this case a daughter of Nestos). In ancient times they gave the region Edonida in western Thrace along the course of the Nestos its name.

history

The area now Chrysoupoli goes back to the division of the Ottoman Empire in 1375 -1376. During this time the city was founded by the Turks as Sarışaban . It got its name from the landowner of the same name (German: Blonder Saban). The first Greek name was Sapeï (Σαπαίοι) after the Thracian tribe who lived in the area in ancient times. The current name goes back to a translation error of the Turkish name, which was incorrectly translated as the golden plow . Nevertheless, the name contributes to the popularity of the place.

The current city goes back to the development of the 17th century. At that time it belonged under the name Eski Sarışaban (Old Sarisaban) to the Eratino Kavalas district (Ερατεινό Καβάλας). On July 11, 1913 , the place was attached to Greece. In 1919 it was recognized as an administrative unit and in 1946 it was promoted to town. The cityscape is dominated by a number of listed buildings, including the tower of the Church of Agios Dimitrios from 1884, the old administration building from 1880 and the building of the Agricultural Bank (Αγροτικής Τράπεζας) from 1924.

In the past, Chrysoupoli was the administrative center of the Kaza Sarışaban and later in the Kingdom of Greece after 1913 the province of Nestos. The municipality of Chrysoupoli was merged with the municipalities of Keramoti and Orino to form the new municipality of Nestos during the 2010 administrative reform . Today Chrysoupoli is the seat of the new parish of Nestos .

population

After the wars, the population consisted of refugees, Epiroten, Greeks from Asia Minor, Pontians , Thracians and Sarakatsans . Therefore, many settlements have names that bear witness to the origins of their inhabitants. The largest groups are the Thracians and the Pontians, each with about 40% of the population. The oldest Greek-style settlements go back to Epiroten, who settled in the 1820s.

The town's most important facility has always been the weekly market, which is held on Tuesdays.
