Slatograd (also written Zlatograd , Bulgarian Златоград to German Goldstadt ) is a city in southern Bulgaria near the border with Greece . The city is the seat of the municipality of the same name and is located in the district / Oblast Smoljan .
history
During the Ottoman period, the settlement was called Daridere ( Даръдере ). After the Balkan Wars she came to Bulgaria. At that time, Pomaks made up a significant proportion of the population.
location
Slatograd is located in the eastern Rhodope Mountains in the valley of the Warbiza river . The city is located about 300 km southeast of the Bulgarian capital Sofia , 70 km east of the ski resort Pamporowo and about 5 km from the Bulgarian-Greek border crossing Slatograd-Thermes .
