Varbiza ( Bulgarian Върбица ) is a city in the Shumen Oblast in eastern Bulgaria with 3300 inhabitants (2016). Warbiza is also the seat of the municipality of the same name, Obschtschina Warbiza ( Община Върбица ).

The city lies in the Danube Plain at the foot of the eastern pre-Balkans on both sides of the Gerila River .

history

The area was already settled by Thracians and Romans in antiquity , Slavs and Bulgarians arrived in the early Middle Ages. It is believed that the first ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire, Asparuch , settled Severen in the area of ​​the Warbiza Pass in the 7th century with the intention of controlling the pass. The Battle of the Warbiza Pass took place at the pass on July 26th, 811 , during which Krums forces defeated the Byzantine army and killed and beheaded Emperor Nikephorus I.
