Regions
The pre-Balkans are basically divided into three regions, the western, central and eastern regions. The regions are divided by the rivers Vit, Cherni Vit and the right tributary of the Yantra.
Western region
The western region stretches between the valleys of the Beli Timok rivers in the west and Vit and Beli Vit in the east. The landscape is mostly hilly and low. The relatively complex valley network, which results from the numerous longitudinal and transverse valleys, determines the deep division of the landscape.
Middle region
With an area of 6576.5 km², the central region is the largest area of the prebalkans. This sub-region is characterized by a wide, hilly and low-mountainous terrain, which is dominated by the mountains in the upper Vit.
Eastern region
With an area of 3,153.6 km², the eastern region is the smallest area in the pre-Balkans. The area is mainly characterized by the deep gorges of the Vrana rivers and the Golyama Kamchyeno river.
