Crimes of the German Wehrmacht
The place is mainly known today for its destruction by the German occupiers of Crete during the Second World War : In retaliation for the killing of German soldiers by an ambush by Cretan freedom fighters, the place was razed to the ground on June 3, 1941 on the orders of Colonel General Kurt Student . To commemorate this war crime , copies of the original plaques, which were put up by the German occupiers as a deterrent, are exhibited in a small memorial place.
The following texts can be read on these three tables, each in German and Greek. It is preceded by an explanation in English and Greek.

"In retaliation for the bestial murder of a paratrooper platoon and the like. of a pioneer half-train by armed men u. Women from ambush, Kandanos was destroyed. "
“Here was KANDANOS. It was destroyed as atonement for the murder of 25 German soldiers. "
The Action Reconciliation later helped build a water plant.
