Moschato ( Greek Μοσχάτο ( n. Sg. )) Is a suburb in the south of the Greek capital Athens . The municipality, which was independent from 1943 to 2010, was merged with the neighboring Tavros to form Moschato-Tavros through the administrative reform in 2010 . It is part of the Athens metropolitan area and is one of the southern or southwestern suburbs of the Greek capital.

location

The area of Moschato lies directly on the north coast of the Saronic Gulf between Kallithea and Paleo Faliro in the east and Piraeus in the west. The Bay of Faliro (older name "Bay of Phaleron"), which stretches from the eastern part of the peninsula of Piraeus (Neo Faliro) in an arc to the east-southeast, borders in its northern vertex on Moschato.

To the north, Moschato borders on Agios Ioannis Rendis in the municipality of Nikea-Agios Ioannis Rendis and the municipality of Tavros . The area of Moschato is flat and slopes gently towards the Bay of Faliro and the Saronic Gulf.

In the west, the Kifisos , which is largely overbuilt with an expressway (Leoforos Kifisou, part of the national road 1), forms the border with Piraeus, in the west the likewise overbuilt Ilisos forms the border with Kallithea.

history

The area has been inhabited since pre-Classical times, as evidenced by some finds. The torso of a kouro, a female torso and a larger than life lion statue were found in Moschato.

In ancient times, the area of today's municipality of Moschato and the adjacent area, which today belongs to Kallithea and Piraeus, was home to the demos Xypete (also Eupete or Eupeteon). Xypete formed a religious unit together with Piraeus, Phaleron and Thymenidai, a so-called tetrakomon, which was dedicated to the veneration of Heracles . The area in which the port of Phaleron was located was protected from the north by the Long Walls and from the east by the Phaleric Wall.

character

The area previously used for agriculture, especially for growing vegetables and vines, was undeveloped until the beginning of the 20th century. The community name (the Greek word for the grape variety Muscatel ) comes from viticulture. Urban development invaded the area in the 1920s and 1930s. The municipality has grown together with Athens, Piraeus and the surrounding suburbs and has been urbanized through residential development. The north of the municipality is characterized by an industrial area.

Coastal strip

The coastline of Moschato was part of the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex at the 2004 Olympics . The 24 hectare area between the Stadium of Peace and Friendship in Neo Faliron and the open beach volleyball stadium was included as an "ecological park". However, the trees that had been planted dried up after a few months when they were not tended after the games, and the area lay fallow. The area is to be used on the one hand for protective measures against flooding and on the other hand for a green recreational and sports area. However, there is a disagreement over the financing between the state-owned company Olympic Properties and the municipality of Moschato.

mosque

With financial support from a Saudi Arabian entrepreneur, a Greek-Arab education and cultural center was established in the Athens suburb of Moschato in 2007. It is located in a former factory building that was bought in December 2006 for 2.5 million euros. There is room for more than 1000 believers. No official mosque is currently in operation in Athens.

carnival

Carnival has had a special tradition in Moschato since the 1990s. It is celebrated in the two weeks before Rose Monday (Kathara Devteri). The carnival parade is the largest in the Athens area.

traffic

The tram runs to the south and connects to Piraeus in the west (previously expanded to the Stadium of Peace and Friendship), central Athens in the north and Glyfada in the east.
