Herwig Görgemanns (born September 2, 1931 in Alpen ) is a German classical philologist.

Life

With contributions to the interpretation of Plato's Nomoi , he received his doctorate in Classical Philology in Würzburg in 1959 . With his work Investigations into Plutarch's dialogue “De facie in orbe luna” he qualified as a professor in Heidelberg in 1965 , where he had followed his teacher Franz Dirlmeier . 1967/1968 he was a fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University .

In 1972 Görgemanns was appointed professor for classical philology at the University of Heidelberg and taught there until his retirement in 1997. The focus of his work is on the field of Greek philosophy, especially Platonism . Among other things, he commented on Plato's Atlantis story, in which he suspects a historical core. Further focuses are Plutarch and Origen as well as the Greek tragedy. He is a longstanding and leading member of the Heidelberg Church Fathers Colloquium.

Together with the church historian Heinrich Karpp (1908–1997) he translated Peri archon / De principiis , "the most fascinating work by Origen , which to this day attracts the most attention" ( Alfons Fürst ).

One of his students is the Göttingen Plutarch researcher Rainer Hirsch-Luipold .
