Volker Riedel

Volker Riedel (born November 17, 1943 in Leipzig ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Riedel studied Latin and German from 1963 to 1968 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He then worked as a research assistant in the literary archives of the Berlin Academy of the Arts . In 1970 he received his doctorate with the thesis Lessing and Roman literature ( Doctorate A ). He achieved his doctorate B ( habilitation ) in 1982 with a thesis on the reception of antiquity in the literature of the German Democratic Republic . Since 1983 he has been a board member of the Winckelmann Society . In 1987 he accepted a professorship for Latin studies at the University of Jena . In 1998 he received the Winckelmann Medal from the city of Stendal . At the New Pauly , Riedel was responsible for the educational system of the reception volumes. His main field of work is the reception of antiquity in German literature.
