66 ° NORTH is an Icelandic manufacturer of outdoor and functional clothing . The company is owned by the filmmaker Sigurjón Sighvatsson . The name refers to the place where the company was founded, Suðureyri on Súgandafjörður (66 ° 7 ′ 47.25 ″ north latitude ).

history

66 ° NORTH was founded in 1926 by Hans Kristjansson, who made clothing for Icelandic fishermen. In the 1960s, the product range was expanded to include work and leisure clothing for use in cold climatic conditions. The brand developed into one of the most popular in Iceland, the Wall Street Journal once called it Iceland's “national clothing manufacturer”. However, in recent years 66 ° NORTH has faced increasing competition from other Icelandic brands and manufacturers of similar products. The company's headquarters are in Garðabær .

Until 2004, 66 ° NORTH was hardly known outside Iceland. The sales area now includes the USA, Canada and some European countries . The Icelandic origin is deliberately used in the marketing of the clothing, alluding to the demanding climatic conditions of the island.
