Friedrich Wilhelm Blass (born January 22, 1843 in Osnabrück , † March 5, 1907 in Halle (Saale) ) was a classical philologist .

Career

Friedrich Blass studied with Hermann Sauppe (1809–1893) in Göttingen and in Bonn with Friedrich Ritschl (1806–1876), whose actual pupil he became. He completed his habilitation in Königsberg in 1874 with Ludwig Friedländer (1824–1909) and Heinrich Jordan (1833–1886). In 1876 he was appointed to succeed Erwin Rohdes (1845–1898) in Kiel, where he became friends with Ivo Bruns (1853–1901), and in 1892 he moved to Halle (Saale), where he worked until his death. In Halle, in the Graeca Halensis, he was close friends with Wilhelm Dittenberger (1840–1906), Eduard Meyer (1855–1930) and Georg Wissowa (1859–1931).

Works

His grammar of New Testament Greek was revised by Albert Debrunner and later updated again and again by others. It is still used today in the academic world at the beginning of the 21st century and is still the most important standard work for grammar questions in the New Testament. It has also been translated into other languages. Pale was also an expert on classical Greek rhetoric. His magnum opus on The Attic eloquence presented the life and work of the ten Attic speakers in three volumes. The detailed comments on all the speeches by these ten speakers gave the work the character of a manual. In addition to the date and authorship, they also assessed style and content.
