Johann Matthias Schultz (born March 25, 1771 in Skodborg , North Schleswig , † December 10, 1849 in Quickborn ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Johann Matthias Schultz studied Protestant theology and philosophy at the University of Kiel . Later he moved to the University of Jena , where he became a member of the ducal Latin society. After his return to Schleswig, the society made him an honorary member. In 1792 Schultz became a Conrector at the Cathedral School in Schleswig .

Although Schultz was originally a theologian, he turned to philology at an early age. As early as 1799 he published a comprehensive study of Mark Aurel's self-reflections , followed in 1802 by a (Greek) edition of this work. This work drew the attention of the academic world of Schleswig to him and resulted in his appointment as associate professor of philology at the University of Kiel (1802). Schultz later published studies on national history, stereotype editions by various Greek authors, and chronological studies that remained in use for a long time. The Philosophical Faculty of the University of Copenhagen awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1836. In 1846, Schultz retired at the age of 75 and moved to Quickborn, where he died three years later.
