Otto Rossbach (born July 13, 1858 in Breslau , † July 22, 1931 in Königsberg ) was a German classical philologist and classical archaeologist .

Life

Otto Rossbach was the son of the classical philologist and archaeologist August Rossbach (1823–1898) and Auguste born. Westphal, the sister of the classical philologist Rudolf Westphal . He attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau and left it in the fall of 1876 with the school leaving certificate to study classical philology, history and philosophy. During his studies in 1877 he became a member of the Old Breslau fraternity of the Raczeks . After years of study in Jena , Breslau and Rostock , he received his doctorate in 1882 at the university there with the thesis Disquisitionum de Senecae filii scriptis criticarum capita II . He then went to Berlin University and devoted himself mainly to archaeological studies for two years, until the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute enabled him to undertake extensive study trips to Italy, Greece, France and England (1884–1885). His study of manuscripts in England prepared the basis for his writing De Senecae philosophie librorum recensione et emendatione , a work on textual criticism of Seneca , with which he completed his habilitation on July 1, 1887 at the University of Breslau for Classical Philology and Archeology.

After his habilitation, Rossbach worked as a private lecturer in Breslau and published archaeological essays, which, like his work on Seneca, were favorably received. After two further study trips (1888 and 1890) he was appointed Associate Professor of Classical Philology in Kiel in the summer semester of 1890 . In the spring of 1895 he changed to a full professor at the University of Königsberg as the successor to the late Gustav Hirschfeld , where he put the focus of his lectures on archeology. He also worked as co-director of the philological seminar, director of the archaeological collection and the university's coin cabinet. He also worked as a teacher at the art academy. Around 1900 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Imperial German Archaeological Institute and on March 11, 1912, he was appointed to the Secret Government Council . In 1926 he retired.
