Franz Messerschmidt

Franz Messerschmidt (born April 13, 1902 in Eisleben ; † missing April 13, 1945 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Franz Messerschmidt attended high school in Halle (Saale) and studied since the winter semester 1920/21 at the University of Halle first theology , then Classical Archeology. After further studies in Heidelberg and Leipzig he received his doctorate in 1926 under Georg Karo in Halle with a thesis on the subject of contributions to the chronology of Etruscan wall painting . The expert in Etruscan antiquity researched mainly on the Etruscan necropolis , for example in Tarquinia or together with Armin von Gerkan zu Vulci . In 1930 he completed his habilitation at the University of Breslau , where he also temporarily represented the archaeological chair. In 1934 he was appointed a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . From the winter semester 1937/38 he taught as an associate professor at the University of Königsberg , succeeding Guido Kaschnitz von Weinberg . Messerschmidt was considered a willing National Socialist, so several trips took him to the Baltic States , where he also met Alfred Rosenberg . In April 1945 he died near Halle (Saale) as a result of the Second World War .
