Hugo Blümner

Hugo Johann Friedrich Daniel Wilhelm Ferdinand Blümner (born August 9, 1844 in Berlin , † January 1, 1919 in Zurich ) was a German classical archaeologist and classical philologist .

Life

Hugo Blümner grew up in Breslau, where he attended Friedrichs-Gymnasium. He studied in Breslau from 1862, in Berlin from 1864, and in the 1865 summer semester in Bonn with Otto Jahn . In 1866 he received his doctorate in Berlin with Eduard Gerhard and August Boeckh with a dissertation on Lukian . In 1870 he completed his habilitation at the University of Breslau for Classical Philology and Archeology, where he taught as a private lecturer. In 1875 he became an associate professor for classical archeology at the University of Königsberg. In 1877 Blümner went to the University of Zurich , where he was Professor of Archeology and Classical Philology until his death in 1919. In 1888/89 he was rector .

He devoted himself above all to the realities of classical antiquity , his technology and terminology of the trades and arts among Greeks and Romans is one of the standard works of ancient technology history. As a philologist, he edited a Pausanias edition together with Hermann Hitzig from 1896 to 1910 and wrote text-critical studies on Greek ( Plutarch , Lukian of Samosata ) and Latin ( Petronius , Apuleius ) authors. He also dealt with the metaphor in antiquity and the language of Bismarckian .

Hugo Blümner was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1889 and a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1916 . In 1894 he was one of the founders of the Society for the German Language in Zurich and is the father of the actor Rudolf Blümner .
