opponent

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Opponent ( lat. Opponere : to oppose, to object) is the name for an opponent of argument. The term is used in a doctoral procedure and in dialogic logic .

Reviewer in the doctoral process

In the case of a doctorate , the doctoral candidate had or has to represent a thesis that he presented in the dissertation . This thesis was opposed in an oral disputation that was held in Latin up to the 19th century. This was done by one or more students or university professors, who were called opponents or opponents , in order to induce the doctoral candidate to defend his work and to test the validity of the thesis.

Nowadays the opponents are the specially qualified academic representatives of the domestic or an external, often also foreign, university, who examine the submitted doctoral thesis at the end of the dissertation process and submit a written report. This expert opinion is presented during the disputation and the relevant question is discussed with the doctoral candidate during the disputation.

The opponents can also be members of the examination committee.

Dialogic logic

In dialogical logic , proponent and opponent form the two stylized interlocutors who check the truth of a statement.
