The Society for German Language and Literature in Zurich was founded in 1894 as the Society for German Language in Zurich . At the constituent meeting on January 20, 1894, the purpose was decided to “ cultivate interest in the correct and pure use of the New High German written language in school and life without impairing the dialect ” by organizing monthly lectures and discussions. The society's area of interest was probably expanded to include literature around 1920 .
Well-known founding members include Albert Bachmann , Eduard Hoffmann , Hugo Blümner , Hermann Bodmer , Jakob Bosshart , Adolf Fick , Ernst Fiedler , Friedrich Fritschi and Friedrich Staub . In addition to the large number of teachers from cantonal schools and universities, some poets and writers were also represented among the members. Among them are about Meinrad Lienert , Nanny Escher , Konrad Bänninger or Edzard Schaper .
In 2010 the company was linked to the German Department of the University of Zurich as the official alumni organization of Zurich's German studies students .
