The Society for German Language and Literature in Zurich was founded in 1894 as the Society for German Language in Zurich . At the constituent meeting on January 20, 1894, the purpose was decided to “ cultivate interest in the correct and pure use of the New High German written language in school and life without impairing the dialect ” by organizing monthly lectures and discussions. The society's area of ​​interest was probably expanded to include literature around 1920 .

Well-known founding members include Albert Bachmann , Eduard Hoffmann , Hugo Blümner , Hermann Bodmer , Jakob Bosshart , Adolf Fick , Ernst Fiedler , Friedrich Fritschi and Friedrich Staub . In addition to the large number of teachers from cantonal schools and universities, some poets and writers were also represented among the members. In 2010 the company was linked to the German Department of the University of Zurich as the official alumni organization of Zurich's German studies students .
