The UZH Archive is the central archive of the University of Zurich (UZH).

tasks

As a public university archive, the UZH archive takes over, evaluates , secures, indexes and mediates the documents from all university organs in analogue or digital form that are worthy of permanent delivery . These documents are supplemented by traditional items of private provenance , such as bequests and association archives. They can be viewed on site in compliance with the statutory protection periods . In doing so, the UZH Archive fulfills the archiving mandate formulated in the Archives Act of the Canton of Zurich and makes a significant contribution to the implementation of the public principle applicable to the university .

history

The archive of the University of Zurich grew out of the filing of the chancellery of the university founded in 1833, the old holdings of which formed the so-called rectorate archive . In 1984, on behalf of the rectorate, work began on revising the university's archives, and in 1985 a regular archivist position was applied for for the first time . Since then, the university's archive has been professionally maintained.

Until the independence as a public institution in 1998, the University of Zurich belonged formally to archive Sprengel of the State Archives of the Canton of Zurich . According to an agreement from 2000, the State Archives continued to function as the university's final archive. The UZH archive actively took care of the creation of the tradition, but delivered older documents to the state archive. 2017 the ratio was revised and the University of Zurich archive now plays a formal and long-term responsibility for everything at the university since the independence arisings and still nascent administrative records .

In 1998, the holdings of the Documentation Center for University History (DUG) were incorporated into the UZH archive. The DUG was originally created in 1972 at the suggestion of some lecturers from the law and political sciences and the philosophy faculties. With regard to a revision of the commemorative publication for the UZH centenary, its task was to “collect material on university history that was scattered or threatened with destruction”, including personal papers.

Stocks

In accordance with the principle of pertinence parent "Old Archive» the old stocks of the University of Zurich archive available at: The division includes log series from the former rectory archives, some of which are to be continued to the present, post-doctoral theses , double that of the various faculties issued diplomas and personnel files of the lecturers .

The “New Archive” department contains the core holdings of the UZH Archive. Their order follows the provenance principle. The "New Archive" contains, among other things, minutes of meetings of the University Management, the Extended University Management and the Senate, as well as documents from the Rector's Department , the Central Services, the Vice-Rectorates , the Dean's Offices , the Administrative Directorate, as well as from the university's institutes and competence centers. The department also includes some larger audiovisual collections.

The “private archives” section contains unofficial items of archival nature. These are primarily scientific bequests from professors of outstanding importance for the university. Among other things, the estates of Paul Moor , Georges H. Wagnière , Max Lüthi and Roger Sablonier can be found here . If possible, the documentary record of activities of the student body is also passed on , for example the documents of the Association of Students at the University of Zurich (VSU), which existed until 2005 , which saw itself as the successor organization under private law to the student body of the University of Zurich (SUZ), which was liquidated in 1978 .

Under “Documentation and collections” you will find thematic collections created by the archive. For example, comprehensive documentation on the university building built by Karl Moser in 1914 , corresponding postcards or a collection of portraits of the university's former rectors.

In addition to annual reports and lecture lists, the “Publications with an Official Character” department covers the entire range of gray literature that is responsible for the university . Since 2012, the UZH website has also been systematically documented and digitally archived over the long term .

Editions and resources

The UZH Archive is pursuing various projects to facilitate research on university history through source editions . For example, all matriculations from the period between 1833 and 1924 are accessible in the “Matriculation Edition” and all courses announced at the university in the 19th century are accessible via the “Historical Lecture Catalogs of the University of Zurich”. In 2017, together with the Zurich State Archives and the Zurich University Association (ZUNIV), an electronic edition of the university's originally handwritten annual reports from the period before 1916 was realized.
