Hans-Joachim Newiger

Hans-Joachim Newiger (born April 1, 1925 in Königsberg ; † December 26, 2011 in Bielefeld ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Newiger received his doctorate on December 21, 1953 at the University of Kiel with the dissertation metaphors and choral personifications under Aristophanes , which in 1957 in an expanded form under the title Metaphor and Allegory. Studies on Aristophanes appeared (reprinted in 2000). In 1955/56 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . His habilitation took place in 1968 at the University of Kiel with Hans Diller and Walter Bröcker with a study of Gorgias' writing on the non-existent. From 1969 to 1971 he was Professor of Classical Philology at the TU Berlin . In 1971 he was appointed to the chair for Greek studies at the newly founded University of Konstanz , which he held until his retirement in 1992. He spent his retirement in Bielefeld.

Newiger was one of the leading Aristophanes experts. He was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

Hans-Joachim Newiger died on December 26, 2011 at the age of 86.
