Gerhard Baudy

Gerhard J. Baudy (born January 26, 1950 in Zweibrücken ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

From 1969 , Baudy studied Greek , Latin , German and religious studies at the Universities of Saarbrücken and Tübingen . He received his doctorate in 1977 in Tübingen with the dissertation Excommunication and Reintegration: On the Genesis and Cultural Function of Early Greek Attitudes to Death . In 1986 his book Adonis Gardens was published. Studies on ancient seed symbolism (therein: initiation motifs in Plato's “Phaedrus” ). He achieved his habilitation in 1989 in Kiel with the work The Fires of Rome: An Apocalyptic Motif in Ancient Historiography . In 1994 he was appointed to the chair for Greek literature at the University of Konstanz (succeeding Hans-Joachim Newiger ) . At the end of the 2015/16 winter semester, he retired, but continues to hold lectures.
