Bandweaver Museum

The Prussian bandweaver school is a former school building in the Wuppertal district of Ronsdorf . Today the premises are used by the adult education center and a ribbon weaving museum.

Building description

The three-storey building was set up in Ronsdorf in 1897 as the Prussian tapestry school . At that time Ronsdorf was still an independent town, the current address is Remscheider Straße 50.

The building has a plaster facade, so-called cuboid plaster, and is structured in six axes with continuous cornices. Arched windows are on the ground floor, segmented arched windows on the upper floors. A very flat stepped ornamental gable is located on the hip roof above the two central axes . The classrooms of the Ronsdorf Volunteer Fire Brigade are located on the ground floor, mainly the exhibition rooms of the bandweaver museum on the first floor and the training rooms of the adult education center and the Bergische Musikschule on the second floor. The Ronsdorf volunteer fire brigade was housed at two locations until the end of the 1980s (in addition to the current location, it was also in a vehicle hall in Scheidtstrasse). When the fire brigade was merged, the old gym, which was located next to the school building, had to give way to a new three-axle vehicle hall. At this point in time, the gym was no longer in use, not least because of its construction with two centrally arranged cast-iron pillars, which were found to be a nuisance during physical education, especially when playing ball sports.

The school building of the textile school has been recognized as a monument since July 18, 1985 .

Bandweaver Museum

In the former school building, the museum , known as the band knitting museum , was set up and opened on the first floor in 1989 . It presents the historical handicraft of the Ronsdorf bandmakers .

The museum is sponsored by the Heimat- und Citizens' Association . The band knitting system is presented by volunteers. The museum has ribbon chairs from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is open on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and also for guided tours by arrangement.

The former bandmaker Josua Halbach senior contributed significantly to the construction of the museum . at.
