Heinz Hungerland

Heinz Hungerland (born March 14, 1905 in Kassel ; † March 27, 1987 in Andernach ) was a German physician and pediatrician . He was rector of the University of Giessen and director of the University Children's Hospital in Bonn.

life and work

Hungerland returned from captivity in 1947 and resumed his work as a senior physician at the children's clinic at the University of Freiburg . In 1951 he became professor of paediatrics at the Medical Academy of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , where he was director of the children's clinic until 1957. After one year as Vice-Rector (1954/55), Hungerland was Rector until 1957, making it the first Rector of the reopened university. After another year as Vice-Rector, he received a call to the University of Bonn to the chair of paediatrics therewhere he taught until his retirement in 1973. Hungerland wrote around 170 scientific papers, mainly on topics of physiological chemistry. He was a member of numerous professional societies and, since 1957, a member of the Leopoldina Academic Academy . In 1968 he was chairman of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine .
