The western municipality is located in the area of a terminal moraine , which is located on the western edge of the Oder valley with heights of about 65 m above sea level. NHN pulls along. The main town of Mescherin, on the other hand, is located directly on the steep bank of the Westoder , which arises ten kilometers upstream from the division of the main stream, which here is only centimeters above sea level. The Westoder (Polish: Odra Zachodnia ) is the border river to the Republic of Poland , the parallel flowing Ostoder (Polish: Odra Wschodnia ) is located entirely on Polish territory. Two kilometers north of Mescherin the Westoder is Polish on both sides; here begins the approximately 55 km long section of the land border with Poland, which stretches north to the Szczecin Lagoon .

Mescherin is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Nadrensee in the north, Gryfino in the east, Gartz (Oder) in the south, Tantow in the southwest and west, and Penkun in the northwest.

The closest cities are Gryfino (Greifenhagen), Gartz (Oder), Penkun and Stettin . Mescherin is the northernmost municipality in the Lower Oder Valley National Park .

history

Mescherin was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 1297. After the Thirty Years' War , which badly affected the entire area, Mescherin belonged to Swedish Pomerania for 72 years .

In the middle of the 19th century, the initial sand pits became a real mining site. Two wooden bridges were built over the Oder in 1857, followed by an iron bridge in 1911, which was destroyed in 1945 after prolonged fighting.

With the construction of weekend houses and a campsite from 1977, the development of the community for tourism began. In 1999 the bulwark on the Westoder was restored so that sport boats can moor there today.

Administrative history From 1817 to 1939 Mescherin and its current districts belonged to the Randow district , and from 1939 to the Greifenhagen district in the Prussian province of Pomerania .

The Randow district was re-established after 1945 and assigned to the state of Mecklenburg . After the GDR district reform of 1950, Mescherin and its current districts belonged to the Angermünde district in the state of Brandenburg (from 1952 in the Frankfurt (Oder) district ). Since 1993 the places have been in the Brandenburg district of Uckermark.

On December 31, 2002, the previously independent communities of Mescherin, Neurochlitz, Radekow and Rosow merged. Since then, they have been part of the community of Mescherin.
