history

In the area around Gerswalde, clearing began in the 11th century .

  • Gerswalde was first mentioned in 1256 as Gyrswalde on the trade route from Magdeburg to Stettin .
  • Herrenstein lies northeast of Templin and was established as a dairy by Otto von Arnim in 1755 . In 1795 the place is mentioned in a document as a tenant. In 1821 it was Vorwerk Herrenstein with about 100 inhabitants, in 1821 there were 146 inhabitants. The old manor house is still preserved today.
  • Kaakstedt was first mentioned in 1284 as Kocstede . The city, as the name suggests, comes from Albertus de Cocstede , who lived here. Name researchers suspect a transfer of the name from Cochstedt near Aschersleben . The town's church dates from the 13th century and was expanded to include a brick tower in the 18th century. Originally the tower had an open lantern , which was removed in 1971 due to disrepair; In 1988 a tiled tent roof was erected.
  • Willmine was founded in 1765 when Fredenwalde was divided. The name comes from the wife of the owner of the place Kurt Friedrich von Arnim , Johanne Wilhelmine geb. by Dargitz .

The current districts of the municipality belonged to the Templin district in the Prussian province of Brandenburg since 1817 and to the Templin district in the GDR district of Neubrandenburg from 1952 . Since 1993 they have been in the Brandenburg district of Uckermark.

On December 31, 2001, the formerly independent municipalities of Friedenfelde , Gerswalde, Groß Fredenwalde , Kaakstedt and Krohnhorst were merged to form the new municipality of Gerswalde.

The list of monuments in Gerswalde includes the monuments entered in the list of monuments of the State of Brandenburg.

  • Gerswalde has a market square with a stone church and a home parlor. Also worth seeing is the restored Gerswalde moated castle , which is now used as a youth home.
  • The desert church Berkenlatten is south of Gerswalde near Berkenlatten .
  • The Friedenfelde manor is located in the Friedenfelde district .
  • In the district of Groß Fredenwalde is probably the southernmost known Middle Slavonic castle complex (the Wallberg) in the German Baltic Sea region. The village still looks like a manor village (field stone church, manor house, school, recently a stable museum) from the time before 1945.
  • A Mesolithic cemetery has been excavated on the vineyard near Groß Fredenwalde since 1962 and again from 2012. In 2014, the earliest known child burial was found in Central Europe.

Another architectural landmark was completed in 2013. From an old locksmith's shop from 1987, which was part of the local LPG , the builder and craftsman Gerhard Schütze built a "workshop" for the Schützes joinery with the help of the Berlin architect Thomas Kröger. The house consists of three areas for a "showroom", a living area and a workshop; Due to the unusual architecture and choice of materials, the house was nominated for the Brandenburg Building Culture Prize and received further media coverage.
