The Uckermark Lakes are located in northeast Brandenburg , starting around 50 kilometers north of Berlin . In the northwest, the lake area merges seamlessly into the Mecklenburg Lake District . The Neustrelitzer Kleinseenland comprises parts of both federal states and lake districts.

Natural space and nature park

Not all lakes in the politico-historical Uckermark belong to the Uckermark natural area . The greatest density of lakes in the district is found in the catchment area of the Havel and is assigned to the northern Brandenburg forest and lake area .

The Uckermark Lakes Nature Park, in turn, consists of more than half of the Uckermark's share of the Havel catchment area, plus the Quillow catchment area . The upper catchment area of the Ucker with Oberuckersee and Unteruckersee is not included.

The catchment area of the catfish with several mostly small lakes belongs to the natural area Uckermark, but only partly to the historical landscape and the district. It belongs to the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and not to the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park. The not very numerous but notable lakes in the north and east of the Uckermark belong to the natural area but not to the nature park.

Number of lakes

The Uckermärkischen lakes include numerous naturally formed lakes, which have an impressive biodiversity and mostly high water quality.

The total of 590 lakes in the Uckermark (> 1 hectare) offer with their banks, supplemented by a total of 233 kilometers of rivers and streams, an enormous variety of habitats for flora and fauna.

Region / origin

The Uckermark as a moraine landscape was shaped by the Ice Age . This created a slightly hilly flat land and, through various mechanisms, hollows, many of which are filled with lakes of different sizes, some with just a wetland. There are tongue basin lakes , there are lakes created from tunnel valleys and there are many small pools that were created when the ice receded through blocks of dead ice . Another evidence of the ice movements 15,000 years ago are the large number of large, rounded boulders , so-called boulders .

Neither the state border nor the district border between Uckermark and Oberhavel form geological or other scenic borders here.

The networking of the lakes is different. In tunnel valleys, chains of lakes formed, through which small rivers flow in some places. Sölle are typically only connected to other bodies of water via the groundwater. This not infrequently leads to strong fluctuations in the water level, since hardly more water seeps away after heavy rainfall than in persistent drought. But there are also lakes that are separated from the groundwater by a layer of clay. Since the Middle Ages, numerous artificial drainage paths have been created to use the water to run mills and to reduce the damage to agriculture and forests from flooding. In the 20th century, many of the trenches were cased, leaving ill-informed visitors to believe that lakes that actually have a drain are isolated. People are more cautious about drainage than they were thirty years ago, as the importance of wetlands for species protection and for the regeneration of groundwater has been recognized.

The extraordinary wealth of lakes is a special characteristic of the contiguous young moraine landscape in the northeast of Brandenburg and in the south of Mecklenburg.

protection

The Uckermärkische Seen are protected as a European bird sanctuary , many since 1997 in the nature park Uckermärkische Seen , more secit 1990 in the biosphere reserve Schorfheide-Chorin .
