The Welse is a left tributary of the Oder in the northern district of Barnim and in the district of Uckermark and flows into the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler waterway near Schwedt / Oder . The 66 km long organically shaped river has its source 2 km northwest of the center (village church) of Friedrichswalde about 73 m above sea level. After a flow path of 5.5 km, of which only about 400 m are piped, the source stream flows into the Great Präßnicksee .

In the upper reaches, the catfish is largely unregulated, also receives water from the northern outlet of the Grimnitzsee and flows as a calm flatland river to the Wolletzsee . From here it goes first to the fish ponds at the Blumberger Mühle in Görlsdorf, which belongs to Angermünde . On the only 10 kilometers from there to the Welsebruch , the river loses more than 30 meters in altitude. The southern part of the Randow flows into the Welsebruch from the north . 17 kilometers further on, the catfish flows into the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler waterway at Vierraden in the port of Schwedt , at sea level.

During the construction of the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler Wasserstraße, on the western edge of the Oder valley, not least to drain the Oderbruch , the lower course of the Welse was widened and included in this canal, which is why the original confluence with the Oder has been lost.
