The Große Kastavensee is a natural lake in the natural area of the Neustrelitz Kleinseenland and in the Uckermärkische Seen nature park in the Oberhavel district ( Brandenburg ). It is located in the Himmelpfort district, part of the town of Fürstenberg / Havel .

Location and hydrography

The Große Kastavensee is located in the north-eastern part of the urban area of Fürstenberg / Havel and belongs to the Himmelpfort district. In the west, the municipality of Wokuhl-Dabelow ( Mecklenburg Lake District ) borders on the Great Kastavensee. The bank areas around the northern tip belong to the urban area of Lychen ( Uckermark district ). At the northern tip of the lake is Kastaven , a part of the municipality of Retzow ; Retzow, in turn, is part of the city of Lychen. The water level is at an average height of 61.7  m above sea level. NHN .

history

The lake was first mentioned in a document in 1299 ( stagnum Grote Karstauell ). Along with 38 other lakes named above, it was part of the initial equipment of the Himmelpfort monastery . The monastery had the sole right of use on this lake.

The interpretation of the name is difficult. Sophie Wauer in the Brandenburg name book favors a derivation from an old Polish basic form * Karstavel to * karstav-rough, full of leaves, smallpox. Since there are three lakes with this name in the vicinity (Großer Kastavensee, Kleiner Kastavensee and Oberkastavensee ), it cannot be decided whether it is an original place name or a transferred water name.

In 1556 the lake was called Kastauel see or Kostauel see . The spellings "Castibel" and "Casthafel" date from 1574. In 1770 the spelling with Castaven was already very much closer to today's. The name that is still in use today is already used in the original table sheet from 1825.

Management

The lake is managed by Uckermark-Fisch GmbH.
