Geography and hydrography

The Kleine Kastavensee is located in the district of Retzow, a district of the city of Lychen. It is located north of the Großer Kastavensee , but with only 3.43 hectares is much smaller than this 62.5 hectare lake. The water level is around 62  m above sea level. NHN

history

The lake was first mentioned in a document as early as 1299 ( stagnum Lutke Karstauel ). Along with 38 other lakes named above, it was part of the initial equipment of the Himmelpfort monastery . The monastery had the sole right of use on this lake.

The interpretation of the name is difficult. Sophie Wauer in the Brandenburg name book favors a derivation from an old Polish basic form * Karstavel to * karstav-rough, full of leaves, smallpox. Since there are three lakes with this name in the vicinity ( Großer Kastavensee , Kleiner Kastavensee and Oberkastavensee ), it cannot be decided whether it is an original place name or a transferred water name.

In 1556 the lake was called Kastauel see or Kostauel see . The spellings "Castibel" and "Casthafel" date from 1574. In 1770 the spelling with Castaven was already very much closer to today's. The name that is still in use today is already used in the original table sheet from 1825.
