Athena relief near Sömek

Sömek is a village in the Silifke district in the Turkish province of Mersin . The place is about 30 kilometers northeast of the district capital and 50 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Mersin . Since a regional reform in 2014, the place is no longer a village, but a district of the district town of Silifke.

Sömek is located about 15 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast in the mountainous hinterland of Kızkalesi , on the connecting road from Limonlu via Cambazlı to Uzuncaburç , the ancient Diokaisareia . The valley of the Limonlu River , the ancient Lamos, runs about two kilometers to the north . In ancient times the river formed the border between the Rough Kilikien (Kilikia Tracheia) in the west and the Plain Kilikien (Kilikia Pedias) in the east. In the north of the village there is a relief of the goddess Athena, carved into a boulder . The Efrenk warrior relief is located about 600 meters northwest of it in a rock wall next to a steep path that leads to the Lamos River. In the place there are remains of a Roman - early Byzantine settlement in ruins and spoils . In the south of the village in the Örendibi corridor are the ruins of a manor from the same period.
