Church in Örendibi from the east

Örendibi is the name of a hallway in the southern Turkish village of Sömek , where the remains of an ancient manor and a church are located. The courtyard was in use from around the Roman era to the early Byzantine period.

location

Örendibi is located on a low hill about one kilometer south of the center of Sömek in the Silifke district of the Turkish province of Mersin . The connecting road leads through Sömek from Limonlu , the ancient town of Lamos, on the Mediterranean to Cambazlı and on to Uzuncaburç , the ancient Olba . The road roughly follows the ancient road connections. The farm is about 14 kilometers from the coast. The area between the rivers Kalykadnos, today Göksu , in the west and Lamos, today Limonlu , in the east formed the eastern part of the Rough Cilicia in ancient times .

description

Due to the poor state of preservation and the heavy vegetation in the area, the individual buildings are difficult to identify. The actual courtyard consisted of a walled area of 25 × 24 meters. The walls are made of polygonal stones, they encompassed various buildings that cannot be precisely defined. Outside, a coupled cistern, a round altar and tank were found in which the locally produced olive oil was stored. At the foothills of the hill on which the estate is located, the remains of various other buildings, probably also belonging to the courtyard, can be seen. The estate also has a three-aisled church, which shows the typical characteristics of the churches in the rough eastern Cilicia. Two sarcophagi with tabula ansata and three chamosoria found nearby are believed to date from the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD, as can be seen from comparisons with specimens found in Korykos . Since in other manors in the area, such as in Gökkale and Karakabaklı , Christian re-use of these tombs could be proven through cross symbols and corresponding inscriptions, it can be assumed that the buildings that were built in Roman times continued to be used at least into the 4th century, i.e. in the early Byzantine period . A lintel with the symbols of the lightning bolt , a shield and a menorah next to it was also found in Örendibi . The former two belong to the Olbian characters known in the area , which have appeared in large numbers since the Hellenistic period . The menorah indicates the presence of a Jewish community that existed here peacefully alongside the other denominations.
