The Wise Little Hen (original title: The Wise Little Hen , alternative title: The wise little Gockel ) is an American cartoon from 1934 from the Walt Disney production, which is based on the fairy tale The Little Red Hen (The Little Red Hen) .

The film from the Silly Symphonies series is set to music throughout as a song. It contains the first appearance of Donald Duck , who still lives on a boat in this film and therefore wears the typical sailor suit that he has kept to this day. The film was first screened on June 9, 1934, so that date is officially considered the "date of birth" of Donald Duck.

action

The clever little hen wants to plant maize and therefore asks the pig Peter Pig and the duck Donald Duck for help. However, they claim they have a stomach ache to avoid work. The hen therefore sows the maize with her chicks herself. After the corn has grown and is about to be harvested, the hen asks Peter and Donald again for help, but they talk their way out again. After the hen has harvested the corn and processed it into delicious food, she asks Peter and Donald if they would like to help her eat. Both immediately put an end to the dramatic display of their stomach ache and eagerly take a covered bowl from the hen. Instead of the food you had hoped for, it only contains a bottle of castor oil .

Another film adaptation

The former Disney employee Ub Iwerks also produced an animation version of this fairy tale under the title The Little Red Hen in his studio in the same year .

Performance in Germany

The film was shown for the first time in Germany in 1935, and on February 26, 1935 it was approved by the Berlin Film Inspectorate . A few months later, Disney stopped the export of further films to the German Reich , so that this remained the only Donald Duck cartoon shown in Germany until the end of the war.

In 1991 the film was released on video , with the title incorrectly translated into The Clever Little Gockel . In 2004 the film appeared on the DVDs Walt Disney Treasures: Funny World of Melodies and Walt Disney Treasures: Donald through the ages with the correctly translated title Die kluge kleine Henne .

Trivia

Donald and Peter Pig's Idle Hour Club, which appears in the film, is encountered again in stories such as the Idlers 'Club in LTB 412 or the Rescuers who slept in LTB 423 as the Idlers' Club . The song Help Me Plant My Corn was one of the first works by songwriter Larry Morey .
