Fritz Mielert
Fritz Mielert (born July 3, 1879 in Wartha (Neisse) , † August 4, 1947 in Dortmund ) was a teacher, later district director of the Dortmund Reich Chamber of Literature and NSDAP member. However, he became known as a Westphalian homeland and travel writer , and above all as a photographer of landscapes and cultural-historical objects.
Life
Fritz Mielert was born in Lower Silesia in 1879 as the son of a master engineer. Mielert discovered his passion for landscape photography early on and from 1897 went on extensive hikes through his Silesian homeland. He captured his discoveries and experiences with photographs. From 1901 he went on long-distance trips through some then little-known and scenic areas of southern Europe , North Africa and the Middle East , in particular through Mesopotamia , Egypt , Sudan and Morocco . In the period between 1903 and 1927 alone, he took over 25,000 photos at home and abroad.
Mielert took up the profession of teacher and taught for a long time as a primary school teacher in the Silesian Sprottau . His third son Harry Mielert was born there on December 27, 1912 , who later also became a writer as a Germanist.
A year after the birth of his third son, Fritz Mielert, then 34, moved with his family to Dortmund, where he quickly made contact with several publishers who published his works.
During National Socialism , he was appointed to be the district management of the Reichsschrifttumskammer , the compulsory professional organization for writers, in Dortmund .
In 1943 his son Harry died in the war. His son Fritz died two years earlier, only his son Ernst survived the war. In 1947 Mielert finally died in Dortmund at the age of 68.
meaning
Mielert achieved national fame in particular for his four-volume photographic work Das Schöne Westfalen with over 430 black-and-white images , which was published in the 1920s by the Dortmunder Verlag Ruhfus - at "low-cost" prices with a total circulation of over 100,000 books. In addition to numerous themed photo volumes, the large-format, richly decorated and expensive Westfalenbuch published by him in 1922 also achieved a high level of awareness. Mielert's main works date from the 1920s.
