The plain language publishing is a book publisher in food . The company, which was founded in April 1983, was located on the site of the Fritz colliery for many years and moved in January 2016 to the Funke Mediengruppe building on Friedrichstrasse near Essen Central Station . It currently has nine permanent employees. The Essen-born Ludger Claßen was the managing director from 1985 to 2016. Claus-Dieter Grabner has been the publishing director since mid-July 2016; at the same time he is in charge of marketing for the Funke media group. The publishing house, which initially set out to “ create a counter-public to the established media”, was taken over in October 2007 by the WAZ media group (now Funke media group). He is a member of the Regionalbuch AG.

Books and book series

Klartext stands for popular non-fiction books (including guides, leisure guides, sports and photo books ) and scientific textbooks (including monographs, anthologies and conference volumes). The publisher has over 3,000 titles in its range; 1,000 of them are available. The annual production is around 180 titles.

In the non-fiction area, the focus is on regional titles on the Ruhr area and North Rhine-Westphalia . One of the most successful non-fiction books is Claus Spricks Hömma! Language in the Ruhr area , first published in 1984 and the 12th edition published in 2009.

In the science area, the program focuses on history (with an emphasis on regional, recent, and contemporary history) and cultural studies . The publisher works with numerous academic institutions, including universities, museums and libraries. He publishes a. a. the series of publications of the Institute for Social Movements of the Ruhr University Bochum , the Fritz Hüser Institute for German and Foreign Workers' Literature and the Westphalian Industrial Museum as well as the yearbook for cultural policy of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft . Numerous renowned scientists publish with Klartext, u. a. Werner Abelshauser , Detlef Bald , Detlef Brandes , Gertrude Cepl-Kaufmann , Christoph Cornelißen , Dittmar Dahlmann , Jost Dülffer , Gerhard Hirschfeld , Gerd Krumeich , Klaus Tenfelde and Wolfram Wette .

Periodicals

Klartext Verlag publishes various popular and scientific journals on the subjects of cultural studies ( kultuRRevolution - journal for applied discourse theory), education ( ways of further education ), industrial culture , architecture and monument preservation ( monument preservation in the Rhineland ; industrial culture - journal for monument preservation, landscape, social, Environmental and technical history) as well as regional and general history ( Forum Geschichtskultur Ruhr ; History in the West ; Heimat Dortmund ; WerkstattGeschichte ).

Non-books

Klartext Verlag has been producing and selling non-book articles with regional references, including postcards, magnets and mugs, since 2010 . The focus is on gift items for the Ruhr area, the Rhineland and other German regions.
