In 1958 he completed a study visit to the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In the same year he obtained the diploma . He then took part in a graduate grant from the Institute for Pre- and Protohistory of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (DAW) until 1960 . In 1960 he completed a study visit to Czechoslovakia and then worked until 1966 as a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory of the DAW. In 1966 he received his doctorate at the mathematics and natural sciences faculty of the University of Jena under Heinz Kliewe , Otto Schwarz and Gotthard Neumann on the subject of Holocene inland limestone and their statement for post-glacial climate and landscape development in southern Central Europe. Basics and main features of a comparative stratigraphy with special consideration of Thuringia .

Then Jäger worked until 1968 as a research assistant at the Institute for Geology at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Between 1968 and 1971 he was head of the engineering geology department at the geology district in Frankfurt (Oder) . From 1972 to 1981 he was a research assistant in the working group Natural Balance and Territorial Character at the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig and lecturer in soil science and Quaternary geology at the Prehistory and Protohistory Department of the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1982 he received his PhD B on the topic of Stratigraphic Evidence for the Change of Climate and Landscape in the Young Quaternary of Eastern Central Europe (with special consideration of the side effects of land use in the Holocene) . In 1983 Jäger became a university lecturer in the Prehistory and Protohistory Department of the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . After the retirement of Joachim Preuss he took over in 1991, first acting head of the now Institute of Prehistory and Early History at the Martin Luther University.
