Otto Schwarz (botanist)

Otto Karl Anton Schwarz (born April 28, 1900 in Weimar , † April 7, 1983 in Jena ) was a German botanist , university professor and member of the People's Chamber of the GDR. Its botanical author's abbreviation is " O.Schwarz ".

Life

The son of a craftsman attended the community school and the secondary school in Weimar. After graduating from high school in 1918, he had to do military service in the First World War. At the end of the war in 1918 he was a member of the soldiers' council of the Pioneer Battalion 19. He then studied botany from 1919 to 1926 in Jena, Hamburg and Berlin. In 1919 he became a member of the Free Socialist Youth and in 1923 of the Red Student Union , in 1927 of the KPD . In 1927 he was at the University of Berlin Dr. phil. PhD. In 1928 he became an assistant at the Biological Reich Institute for Agriculture and Forestry. From 1931 to 1934 he was professor and director of the Institute for Plant Diseases in Smyrna (Turkey). In 1934, after his return from Turkey, he was reprimanded for former membership of the KPD and excluded from the public service. From 1934 to 1939 he worked as a research assistant at the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Museum in Berlin-Dahlem . In 1939 he completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin. From 1939 to 1944 he had to do military service, then until 1946 he was department head at the Institute for Crop Plant Research in Stecklenberg (Quedlinburg district).

In 1946 he became a member of the SED and the Kulturbund . Since 1946 he was a professor with a chair for special botany at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and chairman of the Thuringian Botanical Society and the Botanical Garden . From 1948 to 1951 and from 1958 to 1962 he was rector of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. Since 1950 he has been chairman of the Thuringia regional association and since 1953 chairman of the Gera district management of the Kulturbund.

From 1949 to 1963 he was a member of the parliamentary group of the Kulturbund, a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR, and since 1954 a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry. Since 1958 he was also a member of the SED district leadership in Gera.
