location

Meuschau is located in the northeast of Merseburg, east of the Saale and north of the federal highway 181 . In the north the Luppe flows into the Saale. The Saale is made navigable in Merseburg by two locks, in Meuschau the lower of the two is. The middle canal as a bypass canal with a tow lock, the Werder lock , was intended to replace the Merseburg-Meuschau lock and the Rischmühlen lock, but was not completed due to the Second World War .

history

In a register of the tithe of the Hersfeld monastery , which was created between 881 and 899, Miscawe im Friesenfeld is mentioned as a place subject to a tithing obligation and in 1012 as Muscawe. Hermann Großler brought this place in connection with Meuschau, which has recently been confirmed by Christian Zschieschang. The Old Sorbian name is derived from Musch, man, and means men or soldiers, probably in the Frankish service. You could have done service in Merseburg. Meuschau was then to the left of the Saale, whose main stream probably followed the Wild Saale from Rössen to Kollenbey. It is interesting that in the traditional ending -awe a Germanization from Old Sorbian -ow into -aue = river lowland occurred early on.

St. George

The church of St. George is of Romanesque origin. After being destroyed in the Thirty Years War, it was renewed in 1671, and in 1834 it received the eight-sided roof turret with a curved hood.

Mill

Meuschau belonged until 1815 merseburgischen hochstiftlich- Office Merseburg , which since 1561 under electoral Saxon stood sovereignty and between 1656/57 and 1738 for Sekundogenitur -Fürstentum Saxe-Merseburg belonged. The decisions of the Congress of Vienna the place came in 1815 to Prussia and in 1816 the county Merseburg in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony allocated.

On May 30, 1994 it was incorporated into Merseburg. Meuschau has 917 inhabitants. (Dec. 2014)
