Location of Greifenhagen in Arnstein

Greifenhagen is a district of the town of Arnstein in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt and has about 280 inhabitants.

history

Greifenhagen is actually a double settlement that lies on the Stockbach flowing to the Wipper . Aerial photographs clearly show the division of the settlement into two parts: in the north it is a clustered village, the southern part is a typical double-row village where all the properties are on both sides of a street.

The northern part, the upper village, was mentioned in a document from 1032 as Wyrinthagorod - Wernrode. The southern part, the lower village, was named in several documents from the years 1184, 1188 and 1387 Grifinhagen, Grifenhagen and Gryffenhagen - Greifenhagen. Both place names indicate a rich forest at the time of the foundation by their ending.

Allegedly, the place name of Greifenhagen goes back to the legendary Grifo , who in 747 called on the Saxons to revolt against his half-brother, the Franconian major domus Pippin, to protect their own property .

In the Middle Ages, Greifenhagen belonged to the Freiherrschaft Arnstein. In 1387 it came to the Counts of Mansfeld with the towns of Arnstedt , Quenstedt , Welbsleben , Arnstein Castle , Harkerode , Sylda and Bräunrode . Greifenhagen was parish in nearby Bräunrode, since it never had its own church.

Economically, Greifenhagen was heavily dependent on the industry of the cities of Hettstedt , Mansfeld, only about 8 kilometers away , and of course also on the nearby copper slate pits. Many people worked in the Mansfeld copper and brass works, which after the Second World War became the VEB Mansfeld Kombinat "Wilhelm Pieck". With the liquidation of large-scale socialist industry by the Treuhandanstalt after German reunification in 1990, many residents of Greifenhagen lost their jobs.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Greifenhagen, Alterode , Bräunrode , Harkerode , Quenstedt , Stangerode , Sylda , Ulzigerode and Welbsleben and the city of Sandersleben (Anhalt) merged to form the new city of Arnstein. The administrative community Wipper-Eine , to which Greifenhagen belonged, was dissolved.
