Wimmelburg is a community west of Lutherstadt Eisleben in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . The community belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Mansfelder Grund-Helbra .

geography

The location of the place, in the Valley of the Evil Seven, between protected waste dumps from earlier copper mining times, including the Luther dumps in Goldgrund, where the father of the reformer Martin Luther operated two smelting works as a smelter in 1508/09, is remarkable.

Not far from Wimmelburg, at a depth of about 100 meters, is the Wimmelburger Schlotte, the longest known gypsum cave in Germany (previously driven and measured 2838 meters in length, probably over 5000 meters long - not open to the public).

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are (clockwise and starting in the north): Hergisdorf , Lutherstadt Eisleben , Bornstedt and Blankenheim .

history

Some archaeological finds suggest multiple immigration and emigration of the population. There were z. B. found a stone slab grave (Neolithic), a living pit (Bronze Age) and a cover (Iron Age). At that time there were many cave settlements in the area of today's municipality as well as on the Hüneburg, on the Friedrichsberg and near the birch sheep farm.

Wimmelburg was first mentioned in a document from 1038. That year, on April 25th, the Saxon Count Palatine Siegfried was buried at the "Wigmodeburg". In the early Middle Ages the place belonged to the County of Mansfeld . Hoyer von Mansfeld, the father of Hoyer I. von Mansfeld and progenitor of the Counts of Mansfeld, acquired it when he married Christina, the daughter of Count Siegfried II of Weimar-Orlamünde .

Wimmelburg is in close proximity to Lutherstadt Eisleben, the former residence of the county. After the Count of Mansfeld-Bornstedt died out, the Wimmelburg office came to Saxony. After Napoleon's victory over Prussia (1806/07), Wimmelburg came under French administration, and from 1807 it briefly belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia . After the fall of Napoleon and the reorganization of the states at the Congress of Vienna (1815), Wimmelburg belonged to the province of Saxony in Prussia, from 1946 to 1952 and from 1990 to Saxony-Anhalt.

On April 13, 1945, the first units of the 3rd American Armored Division, coming over the Kunstberg from Wolferode, reached Wimmelburg at around 11.30 a.m. This was preceded on April 12 in the area of the birch sheep farm for the American attackers loss-making fights. Five downed Sherman tanks and other destroyed military vehicles brought the advance to a standstill. During the fighting, the birch sheep's barn also went up in flames. In the grounds of the domain, the Americans met more than 400 British prisoners of war. Their presence was the reason that Wimmelburg was not shot at.

Wigmodeburg and Wimmelburg Monastery

Former Pfuel's manor house

The name of the village is derived from the Wigmodeburg. The castle stood on the Friedrichsberg plateau above today's sports field, according to a document from 1121. The castle was converted into a monastery between 1060 and 1070 by Countess Christina von Mansfeld, wife of Count Hoyer von Mansfeld. The Wimmelburg monastery , consecrated to Saint Cyriacus , existed at this point until 1121 and was then moved to the valley. In 1526 it was secularized by the Counts of Mansfeld-Mittelort and -Hinterort and converted into an office. The monastery church was converted into a Protestant church. A major fire on January 10, 1680 destroyed a large part of the church building, which was only partially repaired and with little expert knowledge. As parts of today's Church of St. Cyriacus, only the main choir with the apse , the northern side choir with the apse, the crossing and the northern transept arm of the originally large and stately monastery church are preserved today , albeit only as a ruin. The remaining monastery buildings, if they had not already been destroyed by the fire, disappeared at the beginning of the 18th century when a large mansion was built in their place by the von Pfuel family . The monastery complex was owned by the Pfuel family from 1664 to 1798, until they sold the Oberamt Eisleben with Wimmelburg to the state of Electoral Saxony. During the GDR era , the manor house, which still dominates the complex today, was used by an agricultural production cooperative (LPG).

The honorary mayor is the non-party Andreas Zinke. He was first elected on June 18, 2000 and confirmed in office in April 2007. Zinke was re-elected in 2014 as well.
