The Krebsbachtalbahn is a standard gauge branch line in the north of Baden-Württemberg . The branch line branches off in Neckarbischofsheim north of the meckesheim-neckarelz railway (Schwarzenbach web) and runs along the eponymous cancer Bach according Hueffenhardt . The 16.9-kilometer route was opened on October 16, 1902. The Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (SWEG) ceased regular passenger traffic with effect from August 1, 2009. Since then, there has only been limited traffic on the route, which is provided by the Krebsbachtalbahn e. V. is carried out. The Krebsbachtalbahn is integrated into the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN), which also includes free travel for the disabled. It is the last still original branch line in northern Baden-Württemberg.

The Krebsbachtalbahn opens up the extreme northeast of the Kraichgau . It got its name from the Krebsbach, a tributary of the Schwarzbach , which it follows from Neckarbischofsheim to Obergimpern . The railway line from Neckarbischofsheim Nord to Untergimpern is within the Rhein-Neckar district , Obergimpern and Siegelsbach are part of the Heilbronn district , and the Hüffenhardt terminus is in the Neckar-Odenwald district .

The Neckarbischofsheim Nord exit station is located three kilometers from the city of Neckarbischofsheim in the district of Waibstadt , it opens up the Bernau district of the city .

Thus, the route runs over 17 kilometers through 5 municipalities and 3 rural districts.

Planning and construction

In the course of the construction of the Badische Odenwaldbahn , the city of Neckarbischofsheim was ignored; because the train passed her three kilometers. Although the city tried to get at least one train stop in the following years, this failed due to the resistance of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways (BadStB), which pointed to the low use of the closest stations in Waibstadt and Helmstadt .

It was not until 1887 that Neckarbischofsheim received a train station on the former Odenwaldbahn section of the Meckesheim - Neckarelz line , although the design remained rather modest. For economic reasons, the BadStB decided not to use freight loading tracks. As a result, the city of Neckarbischofsheim campaigned for the construction of a branch line. But the limestone quarries between Helmhof and Obergimpern also favored a rail connection. Therefore, a corresponding railway committee was founded in the nineties of the 19th century, which campaigned for a branch line from Neckarbischofsheim via Obergimpern and Siegelsbach to Hüffenhardt. This was addressed to the company Lenz & Co. , which then carried out a project study. The project was realized as a private railway by the Badische Lokal-Eisenbahnen (BLEAG), a subsidiary of Lenz.

Waibstadt was originally intended as the starting point for the branch line, with the branch line following the state railway line to the Neckarbischofsheim station, but this failed due to the resistance of the Waibstadt population, who feared soot and smoke pollution from the locomotives stationed there. On February 6, 1900, the Baden government presented a law that included the construction of this branch line. Since it was difficult to acquire land for the railway construction in Obergimpern, the line could not be built until March 1902. Nevertheless, the construction of the railway line went very quickly.

Further development

Timetable from 1909

The line was opened on October 15, 1902; Scheduled traffic began a day later. In the period that followed, however, it turned out that the volume of traffic fell short of expectations. The consequence of this was that in 1927 BLEAG applied to the Baden government to shut down the railway. To prevent this, a state compensation for the deficits was agreed.

In 1931 the line changed to the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Betriebsgesellschaft (DEBG) after the BLEAG had to file for bankruptcy as a result of the global economic crisis . However, that did not change the deficits of the railway line.

In 1940, a siding to the Siegelsbach munitions depot , which was opened in 1939, was built and the track system in the Siegelsbach train station was expanded. Artillery shells were finally assembled in the munitions plant and later V2 rockets were also temporarily stored . At least one train with finished grenades left the facility every day in its peak phase, with the delivery of powder and grenade cartridges as well as the arrival and removal of the V2 rockets with camouflage trains, the ammunition plant probably achieved a transport volume of several trains per day.

While freight traffic on the Krebsbachtalbahn developed positively after the Second World War , the number of passenger traffic stagnated . Therefore, in 1963 SWEG took over the route, which they named "NH" ( N eckarbischofsheim- H led üffenhardt). In the middle of the sixties the operation with steam locomotives was given up in favor of diesel multiple units.

After the access route Meckesheim – Neckarelz was interrupted in 1945 by the blasting of the Neckar bridge between Obrigheim and Neckarelz and the Aglasterhausen –Obrigheim section was shut down in 1971 , the German Federal Railroad (DB) was toying with discontinuing operations on the remaining line. However, since this would also have meant the end for the Krebsbachtalbahn, the SWEG decided to take over the Meckesheim – Aglasterhausen section from the Deutsche Bundesbahn on January 1, 1982.

End of regular traffic

In August 2009, construction work began on electrifying and converting the Schwarzbachtalbahn for the RheinNeckar S-Bahn . Without a SWEG operation between Meckesheim and Aglasterhausen, the Krebsbachtalbahn would have become a low-traffic island operation . Both SWEG and the Baden-Württemberg state government therefore made it clear in 2006 that operations between Neckarbischofsheim and Hüffenhardt will end by summer 2009 at the latest. Since the SWEG did not receive an operator fee from the NVBW for the Krebsbachtalbahn , the route was hardly profitable anyway. Accompanied by the population and numerous railway fans, on July 31, 2009, the last regular passenger train was a MAN rail bus in triple traction without official farewell ceremonies.

Despite the withdrawal from rail traffic on both routes, the SWEG continues to carry out the main inspections of its locomotives in its workshop in Neckarbischofsheim Nord . In addition, at the beginning of 2008 SWEG rented parts of the workshops to the Mosbach locomotive manufacturer Gmeinder , who relocated the final assembly of its locomotives from Mosbach to its new "Plant II". In June 2008, the first rollout of a modernized locomotive in Bernau was celebrated. In Mosbach, Gmeinder only had a 300 m long siding available for test drives. Both SWEG and Gmeinder use the Krebsbachtalbahn, which is in good condition, as a test route even after regular traffic has ceased, which ensured its preservation for the time being. However, a tourist trolley transport proposed by the neighboring communities is not possible. The museum operation that was also proposed, for example by the Unterländer Eisenbahnfreunde, would have been technically possible, but it turned out to be financially not feasible.

Leisure traffic

Thanks to the initiative of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN), the districts, the NVBW and the municipalities, there has been a leisure service with Uerdingen rail buses on Sundays and public holidays from June to October since 2010 . The poor superstructure - especially between the lower and upper lobes - initially made it impossible to use steam trains. With four trips in each direction, all previous stops on the way are served every two hours. The regular network tickets of the VRN are valid as a ticket. In the first year of operation of the leisure traffic, 2010, a Uerdingen rail bus was used. After this successful year with 4500 passengers on 19 operating days, or an average of 27 passengers per train, the trips in 2011 were already offered from May. An Esslingen railcar should be used as the traditional type .

In the following years excursions took place on Sundays and public holidays and one Wednesday per month from May to October. From December 2014 to summer 2016, steam trains with vehicles from the South German Railway Museum in Heilbronn ran during Advent and Easter .

The excursion trains in summer 2016 were used by around 4000 passengers. These trips cost the Rhein-Neckar district and the communities Neckarbischofsheim and Waibstadt € 70,000 annually.

Takeover by the Erms-Neckar-Bahn

At the end of July 2013, the operating license of the previous railway infrastructure company (EIU) SWEG expired , but was then extended at short notice until the end of September of that year. The planned takeover by the new EIU Erms-Neckar-Bahn AG (ENAG) initially failed because the contract to take over the deficit resulting from the maintenance of the infrastructure had not been approved by all districts, but one of the communities concerned: the community of Siegelsbach demanded that she be able to withdraw from the contract in 2016 and not only in 2018, as suggested in the draft. She made her consent to it determines that to be taken by 2016 measures and the school transport to get back on the track. Specifically, the municipality concerned an annual contribution of 5870 euros.

After the draft contract was supplemented with provisions, according to which no level crossings will be rehabilitated for the first three years and, in the event of a permanent closure, the dismantling costs would not be borne by the neighboring communities, the municipal council of Siegelsbach agreed to sign a contract on September 17th to. So nothing stood in the way of the Erms-Neckar-Bahn taking over the route.

A little later, the Baden-Württemberg Minister of Transport, Hermann , assured that the line could expect subsidies for construction and maintenance measures as part of a railroad safety program , as he saw development potential.

At the beginning of November 2013 the five municipalities, three districts and ENAG signed a contract based on which the takeover by ENAG took place on November 13, 2013 and tourism traffic could also be resumed from May 2014 by the Pfalzbahn as an EVU .

The necessary renovation of the 14 level crossings in the Rhein-Neckar district is expected to cost around € 762,000, of which the state intends to take over around 70%.

Resumption of passenger traffic

Since October 19, 2015, some school trips on the parallel bus line 782 of the PalatinaBus during the week have been replaced by trains of the DB Regio on a trial basis for two weeks . This attempt was criticized by local residents, but received mostly positive feedback from the students. In this trial run, 300 passengers per day were reached. The Baden-Wuerttemberg transport minister believes that this is “clearly too low for regular operations to begin”. [outdated]

The bus line 782 of the PalatinaBus , which runs parallel to Untergimpern and which previously ended before the district border between the Rhein-Neckar district and the Heilbronn district , where the buses had to run empty to Obergimpern in Heilbronn, has been in place since September 12th after ten years of negotiations From 2016 to December 2018 for the time being - for the re-tendering of the “Sinsheim Nord” line bundle - in cooperation with RBS line 681 to Bad Rappenau, there should be seven continuous journeys per company and direction every day. This saves the passengers a two-hour detour. This costs the public transport authorities almost € 90,000 annually, 40% of which is paid by the municipalities of Neckarbischofsheim and Waibstadt, the remainder by the district of Heilbronn.

Alternative considerations

In 2005 the parliamentary group of the Greens demanded the preservation of the Neckarbischofsheim Nord – Obergimpern section in connection with a 2 km long gap between Obergimpern and Bad Rappenau . This was based on a paper from the then transport policy spokesman Gerhard Stolz from the year 2000. The proposed route would correspond to the original plan around 1900, which had provided a route to Hüffenhardt only as a branch. Closing the gap would enable the western part of the Krebsbachtalbahn to be integrated into the Heilbronn Stadtbahn . However, the concept was not pursued further for the time being.

However, ENAG is thinking about closing the gap between Obergimpern and Babstadt to significantly increase the attractiveness for commuters in the direction of Heilbronn and thus to get closer to the resumption of regular traffic.

After the Meckesheim – Aglasterhausen railway was taken over by SWEG in the early 1980s, it formed an operational unit with the Krebsbachtalbahn until July 2009; the SWEG called "MAH" ( M eckesheim- A glasterhausen / H üffenhardt).

While their importance originally lay primarily in the transport of agricultural goods, the most recent focus was on school transport to Neckarbischofsheim.

Before 2007, traffic only took place from Monday to Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. It was driven every two hours, but there was no "regular timetable". On school days there were also trains on the Aglasterhausen – Hüffenhardt route in the morning. The direction of travel was changed in Neckarbischofsheim Nord, and the train then went to the next station on the Krebsbachtalbahn. This route was set up primarily in favor of school traffic to and from the Neckarbischofsheimer Adolf-Schmitthenner-Gymnasium. In addition, on weekdays a train ran from Meckesheim, the starting point of the Schwarzbachtalbahn, to Hüffenhardt.

As of 2006, an average of 450 schoolchildren and 105 other passengers used the train every day. The SWEG therefore announced in 2006 that it would cease operations between Neckarbischofsheim and Hüffenhardt with the start of electrification of the Schwarzbachtalbahn, i.e. with effect from August 1, 2009. The responsible public transport authority , the Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW), has ordered traffic on the Schwarzbachtalbahn, but not on the Krebsbachtalbahn, since August 2009.

Due to the takeover of the Schwarzbachtalbahn by Deutsche Bahn AG and the lack of prospects for the Krebsbachtalbahn, some train drivers already resigned in 2007 , so that since May 2, 2007 the passenger trains - with the exception of two pairs of trains in school traffic - had to be replaced by buses . In August 2007, for the same reason, the SWEG announced the complete cessation of traffic with effect from December 9, 2007, but withdrew this statement shortly thereafter. The last continuous SWEG train from Meckesheim to Hüffenhardt ran on September 7, 2007; after that, both routes were switched to moving-in operation, which saved the Waibstadt train conductor. Due to the reduced timetable, the number of passengers (excluding school traffic) fell to under ten a day.

Vehicle use

In the first two decades of operation, the two Vulcan -B locomotives 3c and 4c from BLEAG were used. In the mid-1960s, steam train operation - as on all lines of the SWEG, which was in the meantime operator of the Krebsbachtalbahn - was given up in favor of diesel multiple units. From 1969, Esslingen railcars operated on the railway line, but they came from mainly other SWEG lines that have since been closed. From 1982, when the route Meckesheim – Aglasterhausen was taken over by SWEG, brand-new NE-81 multiple units also ran on the Krebsbachtalbahn as well as a few MAN rail buses . In 1998, the use of the Esslingen railcars on the route finally ended. Passenger traffic was last served with the diesel multiple units from MAN and NE-81 multiple units.

A relatively large amount of wood was transported over the route from the Kleiner Odenwald , for which NE-81 railcars were also used. In addition, the Siegelsbacher depot of the Bundeswehr was served. The armed forces depot was reduced in size from 1996 onwards, in 2002 it became a mere custody warehouse and in 2010 it was completely abandoned, so that the volume of goods only declined and then ceased to exist. From the late 1990s to 2006, the volume of freight on the route fell by 90 percent to a volume of less than two freight wagons per week. Most of these were wood transports from Hüffenhardt. After the DB reduced the track systems in Meckesheim, the transfer point to the SWEG network, there is no longer a daytime transfer of goods wagons between DB and SWEG.
