The Krebsbach is a brook in the Kraichgau in north-western Baden-Württemberg, almost 13 km long, which flows into the Schwarzbach from the left and south-east near Waibstadt in the Rhein-Neckar district .

geography

course

The Krebsbach rises a good two kilometers east of Bad Rappenau - Obergimpern on the edge of a Michelhardt forest area ("large forest") and flows fairly steadily to the northwest. It crosses Obergimpern, Untergimpern , Helmhof and Neckarbischofsheim , and finally flows into the Schwarzbach near Waibstadt as its largest tributary by length and second largest by catchment area .

The Krebsbachtalbahn, which is only operated to a limited extent, and the L 549 run through the valley near the stream .

Catchment area

Its catchment area of 34.9 km² borders on the long right side in the northeast to that of the upward Schwarzbach tributary Wollenbach , in the east behind the Scheide around the source streams to that of the Neckarmühlbacher Mühlbach . This drains directly via Schwarzbach and Elsenz like the Krebsbach directly to the Neckar, as does the short source brook of the Böllinger Bach , also called Krebsbach , whose drainage area is only briefly in the south. The competing brooks on the other side of the again long left watershed in the south-southwest lead their water almost to the end via the Insenbach and then smaller tributaries from it to the Elsenz. The 302  m above sea level NN highest point in the catchment area is on this section, shortly before a small stream runs behind it to the downward Schwarzbach.

Around the upper reaches there are more fields than forest areas, on the middle course between Untergimpern and Helmhof a wide forest strip stretches very closed over the catchment area and only leaves out the narrow valley areas. There is almost no forest on either side of the lower reaches.

history

The Krebsbachtal was already settled in Roman times. Today's settlement originated in the time of the Franks around the year 500 in Neckarbischofsheim. Ober- and Untergimpern were probably settled between the 8th and 11th centuries. Helmhof was founded by Neckarbischofsheim around 1712 as a clearing settlement on the Krebsbach. The course of the brook was changed several times, so it was expanded to the city moat of Neckarbischofsheim in the 14th century. It was often used to drive mills (three mills and a sawmill in Neckarbischofsheim, two mills near Helmhof, a mill in Untergimpern (Mühlstrasse), valley mill near Obergimpern) and as a horse pond.

The brook had different names. It was mentioned in 1561 as Bischofsheimer Bach , in 1752 as Gimperner Bach , in Neckarbischofsheim the Bach was called Stadtbach . More recently it was called Biegelbach , Wettbach and Krebsbach .

Krebsbachtal near Obergimpern, dam of the retention basin W 30

As the floods in Untergimpern and Neckarbischofsheim repeatedly occurred after heavy rainfall, a rainwater retention basin was built in front of Obergimpern and after the concrete plant between Ober- and Untergimpern to limit the amount of water flowing in from the upper course. Shortly before the confluence with the Grundbach and the middle Rosenbach, there are two large left tributaries of this type.

The retention basin W 30 between Ober- and Untergimpern was completed in May 2003. It has a retention volume of 26,200 cubic meters, its maximum storage area is approx. 2 hectares. The dam is roughly 3.30 meters high and 43 meters wide and 88 meters long. The construction costs amounted to 640,000 euros, 70 percent of which were funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg.

traffic

The Krebsbachtal has been connected to the rail network via the Krebsbachtalbahn since 1902 . Regular passenger traffic was discontinued in 2009. However, on Sundays and public holidays from June to October, excursion services with Uerdingen rail buses are offered.
