Waldkatzenbach is a district of the municipality Waldbrunn in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg .
Geographical location
Waldkatzenbach is located in the southeastern part of the Odenwald in its red sandstone area on the Winter Breath , an elongated plateau that culminates in the highest mountain in the Odenwald, the Katzenbuckel ( 626 m ). This mountain is in the west of the Waldkatzenbach district and the location is at the foot of its southeast slope, which rises above the winter breath. To the north, the district drops steeply in a notch valley to the hamlet of Unterhöllgrund . And in the south is the Waldbrunn holiday village . The district covers 610 hectares, of which 286 hectares are forested.
Strümpfelbrunn , the main town in the Waldbrunn community, is one and a half kilometers east of Waldkatzenbach. The neighboring village of Oberdielbach to the south follows directly behind the holiday village .
history
The existence of Katzenbach can be traced back to 1370 when the Lords of Zwingenberg were founded . After 1403 the Hirschhorns acquired from the previous owners, the impoverished lords of Zwingenberg, practically their entire former rule of Zwingenberg, which consisted of goods scattered around the area. In 1746 the place came with the entire rule of Zwingenberg to the Electoral Palatinate . The Protestant church was built in 1747/48.
The name Waldkatzenbach became common in the 19th century to distinguish it from Neckarkatzenbach, which was then of the same name and not far away .
The Katzenbuckel shaped the economic development of the place. Basalt was mined in a quarry and processed into road gravel. Then it became a magnet for tourism and the starting point for the transformation into a health resort.
On January 1, 1973, Waldkatzenbach and four other communities formed the new community of Waldbrunn.
traffic
The district road K 3926 runs through Waldkatzenbach as a loop, which connects the town to the south and east with the state road L 524 from Eberbach to Mudau . In the town center, the K 3925 branches off from the K 3926 in the direction of Unterhöllgrund to the north. Beyond the district boundary to the Rhein-Neckar district , this road reaches the bottom of the Itter valley as K 4113 at the Gaimühle .
Natural monument "Waldkatzenbacher Linde"
- The village linden or fountain linden ⊙
stands at a “Lindenbrunnen” fountain, the place of the old Waldkatzenbacher village fountain. Today's natural monument was planted after the Thirty Years War , like many linden trees at that time, as the "Peace Linden tree". According to local traditions, only seven families survived the Thirty Years' War and, out of gratitude, planted seven tied linden saplings at the common village well.
A sign in front of the linden tree reminds of this with the following text:
“A magnificent natural monument that seems to be reminiscent of the romantic painters and the rural idyll of the familiar villages of the Winter Breath of yore.
And yet the linden tree before you is a witness of suffering, misery and misery in a bad time.
For thirty years the war raged, mercenaries and dispersed troops plundering, looting and murdering across the country. At the end of this unfortunate Thirty Years War, only a third of the population in the peaceful villages around the Katzenbuckel was still alive.
Seven families had survived in Waldkatzenbach and in 1648, in the year of the Peace of Westphalia, these seven fathers came together here at the old village fountain. Out of gratitude they planted seven tied linden saplings in a planting hole, and from these saplings today's linden tree grew. It is over 350 years old, has a height of 25 m and a trunk circumference of 7 m.
It is to be hoped that the Waldkatzenbacher Linde will be able to report happy times for many years to come. "
The summer linden tree entered in the list of prominent and old tree specimens would therefore now be over 370 years old. The seven saplings that have grown together form a gnarled, overgrown trunk with a circumference of 7.15 m and an ostrich-like, multi-stemmed crown. An exact measure of the height of the tree is not known, but it is estimated to be over 25 m.
Personalities
From 1833 to 1848 Karl Freiherr von Drais lived in Waldkatzenbach. A street is named after the inventor of the walking machine , which is considered the forerunner of the bicycle .
