Location of the Carl Schurz barracks in Baden-Württemberg

The Carl-Schurz-Kaserne in Hardheim is a barracks of the Bundeswehr . It is named after the German revolutionary and later Minister of the Interior of the United States Carl Schurz .

Foundation and first occupancy

In 1961 the construction of the barracks began. In 1966 the air defense battalion 12 (FlaBtl 12) moved into the barracks . The local Bundeswehr soldiers of the battalion often helped with civil protection . Help was provided in 1967 with the flood in Freudenberg and in 1984 with the flood disaster in Königheim .

Restructuring of the units

On October 1, 1979, FlaBtl 12 was reclassified to Air Defense Regiment 12 (FlaRgt 12) with the simultaneous introduction of the new anti-aircraft weapon "Gepard" , consisting of six batteries with six anti-aircraft cannon tanks each. The dissolution of the GDR and the resulting German reunification on October 3, 1990 led to the entire demobilization of the NVA ; FlaRgt 12 began training former NVA soldiers in the military equipment of the Bundeswehr in January 1991.

On October 1, 1994 FlaRgt 12 was subordinated to the anti-tank gun battalion 12. In 1998 it was converted to the Gepard 1A2 anti-aircraft gun . After the dissolution of the mixed anti- aircraft regiment 2, the anti-tank battalion 12 was subordinated to the newly created anti-aircraft brigade 100 in 2002 . In July 2011, the anti-tank gun battalion 12 was disbanded and the era of the security battalion 12 followed ; During this time, especially infantrymen were trained according to a new concept (" Infantrymen of the Future" [IDZ] ). At the end of 2015, the 12th Security Battalion in Hardheim was disbanded.

Closure plans

On October 26, 2011, then Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière announced the closure of the barracks and the material warehouse on the Wurmberg. The barracks was then used by a local company for the production of hydropower screws, and plans were made to install refugee accommodation on the barracks site from 2015 . From 13 September 2015 to the end of 2016, four buildings were used as refugee accommodation.

Reactivation of the barracks as a Bundeswehr location

On November 2, 2017, exactly six years to the day after the decision to close it on October 25, 2011, the Carl Schurz barracks in Hardheim was officially reactivated.

On December 6, 2018, then Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen announced during a visit to the Munster training center that the Bundeswehr would set up a sixth tank battalion in Hardheim. The Bundeswehr will invest around 20 million euros there “(...) in modern accommodation”.

The location has a shooting range , driver training grounds for bike and chain, laser track and tank washing system . There is also a rail loading facility in Tauberbischofsheim, 18 km away .

On October 1, 2019, the first 65 soldiers of the new 363 tank battalion began their service in Hardheim's Carl Schurz barracks. It was also announced that the federal government will invest 55 instead of the originally mentioned 20 million euros in the location. The headquarters and supply companies are set up. The 4th company from Bad Frankenhausen (Thuringia) is to follow on October 1, 2020 and the 3rd company from Pfreimd (Upper Palatinate) is to be relocated to Hardheim on April 1, 2021. The second company of the new tank battalion will be completely reorganized (planned from the end of 2021). At the end of the deployment process (expected in 2022), the 363 tank battalion should comprise a total of 463 soldiers.

In addition, a special forces unit is also being set up at the Hardheim site . A total of 700 are soldiers and 44 battle tank type Leopard 2 in Hardheim are stationed.
