The Margarethenschlucht (also Margaretenschlucht ) is a gorge in the Odenwald red sandstone on the district of Neckargerach between Mosbach and Eberbach am Neckar , about 1.5 kilometers southeast of Neckargerach.
The Flursbach , which arises a little south of Reichenbuch , runs roughly to the west and only 1.6 km long, drains less than 2.5 km², has carved the Margarethenschlucht gorge into the right slope of the Odenwald Neckar valley called the Gickelberg . Which also often stepped gorge runs just before the end of this step-rich steep section at an acute angle from the left of less than half as long iron Busch trench to, then the stream passes under the railway line along the Neckar river and flows from the right in this. In the approx. 300 meter long Margaretenschlucht the stream loses a total of 110 meters in height, of which 85 meters in eight waterfall steps , the lowest and largest of which drops 10 meters. The waterfall staircase in Margaretenschlucht is the highest waterfall in the Odenwald and one of the highest in the German low mountain ranges.
A hiking trail follows the course of the gorge, the side gorge of the Eisenbuschgraben is not accessible. The Wolf Gorge is only five kilometers downstream near Zwingenberg .
Upstream are the smaller and less spectacular gorges Mordklinge (at the Guttenbach barrage ), Tännichklinge (east of the Binau settlement) and Ludolfsklinge (north of Diedesheim ) on the right side of the Neckar valley. The last is already beyond the red sandstone landscape of the Odenwald in the shell limestone of the building land and is a geological natural monument in Baden-Württemberg because of the formation of recent limestone tuffs . In the southeast of the landscape boundary, the shell limestone covers the lower lying red sandstone. Gorges are much less permanent in it, which is why there are fewer gorges upstream of the Ludolfsklinge. Only streams that carry enough water to quickly transport large quantities of falling rock can create deep cuts in the landscape surface there, e.g. B. the Steinbach at Hornberg Castle .
Protected areas
The Margarethenschlucht is part of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park . An area of 5.1 hectares has been under nature protection since January 26, 1940 by ordinance of the Baden Ministry of Education and Culture . Petrified traces of chirotheria were found in its upper area . The Margarethenschlucht is part of the 421.4 hectare FFH area Odenwald Neckargerach-Waldbrunn .
