geography

Geographical location

climate

Precipitation in Diedesheim

In Diedesheim there is more precipitation compared to the national average, especially in the months of November to March. This also affects the water levels in the Neckar. This overflows its banks almost every year in winter or spring.

Flood

Diedesheim was repeatedly a victim of flood events. The highest water level ever measured on the Neckar was 8.95 m on December 21, 1993 (mean value 1994–2003: 2.36 m). However, this level is only the highest since measurements began. As can be seen from high water marks, the water levels on December 28, 1882 and October 30, 1884 must have been much higher.

The 3 highest water levels measured were:

  • 8.95 m on December 21, 1993
  • 8.38 m on April 14, 1994
  • 8.31 m on May 24, 1978

history

middle Ages

The date of foundation of Diedesheim cannot be precisely determined. The ending of the place name in -heim indicates that the Franks were settled between 600 and 800. Diedesheim was first mentioned in a document in 1306 as Duthensheim .

Modern times

The place remained small and meaningless for centuries and only grew to its present size after the settlement of industrial companies and after the Second World War . The historic town center, where the town hall was built in 1773 and demolished in 1970, can only be recognized today by means of an information board. The former site of the Hengstenberg company forms today's center with the city fountain .

In 1973 a 1200 year celebration was celebrated in Diedesheim, which was based on a founding date of 773.

coat of arms

The Diedesheim coat of arms shows a vine with red grapes. They were also on the seal from 1816, where a vine and a fisherman can be seen on a raft. The coat of arms of 1913 is almost identical to today's one.

Buildings and monuments

In Diedesheim and on the Schreckhof there are some old half-timbered houses, for example that of the Goob company and the “Krone” inn. Another old building is that of the Diedesheim elementary school from 1901.

Economy and Infrastructure

Traditional trades and agriculture

In the early years the main industry was the Neckar fishing and wine . In 1768, 37,000 liters of wine were pressed in the manorial winery. After the vines fell ill in the 1870s, viticulture was abandoned. However, there are still some vineyards on the slopes below the Schreckhof, most of which are privately owned.

Established businesses

Industrialization began in Diedesheim around 1898 with the establishment of a large Portland cement factory. The machine factory of Hüller Hille GmbH is located on this site today .

In 1866 the Georg Peter Eckert brewery and the Ludwig Lang deer brewery were founded, on whose premises the Hengstenberg cucumber factory later stood. After Hengstenberg withdrew from Diedesheim, the factory was demolished.

The primary school in Diedesheim, built in 1901, had 203 pupils in 1914 who were taught by two teachers. Today most of the pupils go to the Auguste-Pattberg-Gymnasium, the Realschule Obrigheim or the Auguste-Pattberg-Hauptschule after primary school.
